THE COTTAGE by Sandy Rustin

Hartford Stage | January-February 2026

It is 1923 in a charming cottage in the English countryside. Sylvia is certain that she married the wrong man and has sent telegrams to that effect to both her husband and her lover’s wife. That brazen decision sets off a cavalcade of arrivals, surprises, and laughs. What follows is a fast-moving, unpredictable, and — potentially murderous — romp.

“Under the capable direction of Zoë Golub-Sass, the play has more depth of character and tension while not sacrificing its humor with the support of an excellent ensemble cast.” -Tim Leininger, CT Critics Circle

“It is rife with social stereotypes but begins upending them almost immediately, offering endless surprises.” -The Hartford Courant

This type of comedy goes full throttle with sight gags, jokes, and lowbrow clowning around. This becomes infectious for theatregoers…” -Fred Sokol, CT Critics Circle

“All of the hilarity and shenanigans are skillfully harnessed by Director Zoë Golub-Sass…The rhythm of the play and the pacing are critical, and Ms. Golub-Sass adeptly guides the action, the physical comedy, and silliness with flawless aplomb.” -Stuart Brown, CT Critics Circle
